Abuko is a town in The Gambia primarily renowned for the Abuko Nature Reserve, the nation's first officially protected area. Geographically, it is located south of the Kanifing district at the southern terminus of the Oyster Creek. Established in 1968, the reserve covers approximately 105 hectares and preserves one of the last remaining fragments of tropical gallery forest in the region. Beyond its ecological significance, Abuko serves as a crucial educational hub for environmental conservation in The Gambia. The town itself has expanded around the reserve, serving as a residential area for commuters and a primary base for ecotourism activities. Historically, the park's creation was a pioneering achievement in West African conservation, initiated by the ornithologist Eddie Brewer. Today, Abuko hosts a rich array of wildlife, including Nile crocodiles, vervet monkeys, and over 270 species of birds, making it an essential destination for ecological research.
