Toau Atoll Wildlife Area is an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago with a lagoon of 300 km² and about 20 motus. Known for pristine coral reefs and large seabird populations, including the red-footed booby (Sula sula) and the great frigatebird (Fregata minor). The islands are covered with coconut palms and Scaevola shrubs. The area was designated a protected area in 1995 to conserve fragile ecosystems. The population consists of a few families who mainly live from copra and fishing. The lagoon is rich in tuna and barracuda. Diving in the passes is known for strong currents. The atoll is also an important nesting site for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). Access is restricted to avoid disturbance.
