Visiting
The Teahupoo coast is a natural area that can be viewed from land or water. The famous wave breaks over a shallow coral reef - watch it from a boat or the shore.
Typical hours
The area is accessible at any time as it is an open coastal landscape. The best conditions for wave watching are in the morning with onshore wind.
Photography
Photography is of course allowed. The huge waves provide memorable action shots. A telephoto lens is recommended to capture the details of the breaking waves.
Time needed
Allow 1-2 hours on the coast to watch the waves and soak in the atmosphere. At a surf event you can easily spend half a day.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a trip to the village of Teahupoo and the nearby lagoon. A boat ride to the reef also has spectacular views of the waves.
Getting there
Teahupoo is on the southwest coast of Tahiti, about 1.5 hours' drive from Papeete. Follow the coastal road to the village, where there is a parking area at the road's end.
Insider tip
Visit the coast during surf season (May-August) for the biggest waves. Ask locals about the best spots - the wave isn't always visible, only when the swell is good.
