Harrison Smith Botanical Garden (French Polynesia)

Weather…

The Harrison Smith Botanical Garden in Papeari is a lush testament to the passion of its founder, an American physicist who moved to Tahiti in 1919. Harrison Smith dedicated his life to creating a sanctuary for tropical flora, importing hundreds of species from Southeast Asia and other tropical regions. Spanning nearly 14 hectares, the garden features towering bamboo groves, expansive water lily ponds, and a diverse collection of exotic trees that have matured over a century. Known locally as the 'Grandfather of Trees', Smith transformed this coastal plot into a botanical masterpiece that showcases the incredible diversity of the tropics. Visitors can wander through shaded paths and discover rare varieties of mangosteens, pomelos, and ornamental plants that Smith successfully acclimatized to the Polynesian soil. The garden remains a vital green space on Tahiti's southern coast, offering a serene environment for education and relaxation, reflecting the enduring legacy of one man's botanical vision.
