Point Venus (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Point Venus is a landmark of early scientific exploration. Cook's observation of the Venus transit helped refine astronomical measurements. The lighthouse, built in 1867, is one of the oldest in the Pacific. It was designed by French engineer Léonce Reynaud. The museum features artifacts from Cook's voyage, including navigational instruments. The black sand beach is composed of basalt eroded from inland volcanoes. Point Venus was also a landing site for early European missionaries in 1797. The site is managed by the Tahitian tourist board. In 2015, a cultural center was added showcasing Tahitian navigation. The point features panoramic views of the Pacific and Moorea. It is a protected area under French Polynesian law.
