The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands (Musée de Tahiti et des Îles) in Punaauia is French Polynesia's premier cultural institution, dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the South Pacific. Established in 1974, the museum is situated on a coastal site of great historical importance called Nu'uroa, formerly a ceremonial ground. Its permanent exhibitions are organized into four thematic areas: natural history, material culture, social life, and religious history. Highlights include monumental Tiki statues carved from stone and wood, ancient seafaring canoes (va'a), and intricate traditional crafts like tapa cloth and weaving. The museum provides an in-depth look at the complex social structures and navigation techniques that allowed early Polynesians to colonize the vast Pacific Ocean. Surrounding the museum is a botanical garden featuring "canoe plants" brought by the original settlers. With its striking views over the ocean toward the neighboring island of Moorea, the museum serves as both an educational hub and a serene landmark for understanding the islanders' profound connection to their environment.
