Mount Aorai provides one of the most dramatic hiking experiences in the South Pacific, attracting adventurers from around the world. The well-marked trail begins at the Belvedere lookout point above Papeete, ascending through lush rainforests and eventually reaching the unique cloud forest ecosystems of Tahiti's interior. The hike is renowned for its dramatic ridge sections, most notably the Devil's Pass (Passage du Diable), where the path narrows significantly with steep vertical drops on either side. Reaching the 2,066-meter summit rewards hikers with sweeping views of the rugged island landscape, the neighboring Mount Orohena, and the distant silhouette of Moorea island across the sea. Simple mountain shelters located along the trail allow hikers to stay overnight, providing the chance to witness a spectacular sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, making it for serious mountain enthusiasts.

Getting there

The recognized starting point of this famous mountain trek is usually at the O Belvedere restaurant, high above the capital. This spot is easily reached by car via a steep, winding, and continuously ascending mountain road.

Best season

The hike should absolutely be undertaken strictly during the dry season to safely navigate the steep, exposed paths. A very early start well before sunrise is handy to completely avoid oppressive heat and ensure clear visibility.

Terrain & paths

The terrain is highly demanding, leading across narrow ridge lines and steep rock sections partially secured by ropes. A complete absence of vertigo and excellent physical condition are prerequisites for the ascent.

What to bring

Professional hiking boots with optimal grip, along with warmer clothing for the distinctly cooler altitudes, are absolutely mandatory. You must bring plenty of your own water, high-energy food, and ideally a reliable headlamp.

Around the starting point near the restaurant, there are distinctly limited, mostly free parking options solely for hikers. It is always highly advisable never to leave any obvious valuables out in the open in your parked car.
