Mohotani Nature Reserve (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Mohotani Nature Reserve on Mohotani Island (Marquesas) protects 12 km² of remote, biodiverse terrain. The uninhabited island features basalt cliffs and dry scrubland. It is a vital nesting site for the Marquesan fruit dove (Ducula galeata) and the Mohotani reed warbler (Acrocephalus mendanae). Established in 1991, the reserve conserves endemic flora and fauna, including the Mohotani tree fern (Cyathea mohotani). Cliffs drop steeply into the sea, exceeding 200 meters in height. Coral reefs surrounding the island support diverse marine life. The reserve is managed by the French Polynesian government, and access requires a permit. The island also serves as a reference site for ecological studies.
