Maraa Grotto is a memorable natural wonder located on the southwest coast of Tahiti, near the village of Paea. This site features a series of large, arch-shaped caverns carved into the base of a lush, fern-covered cliffside. The most famous cave, Paroa, is filled with crystal-clear freshwater that seeps through the volcanic rock, creating a deep pool of shimmering emerald light. A unique characteristic of Maraa Grotto is its remarkable optical illusion: due to the extreme clarity of the water and the curvature of the ceiling, the cave appears much shallower than it actually is, only revealing its true depth to those who swim deep into its recesses. The air inside the grotto is notably cool and damp, providing a refreshing escape from Tahiti’s tropical heat. Historically, the grotto served as a private bathing spot for Polynesian royalty, who valued the purity and serenity of its waters. Today, the site is beautifully landscaped with walking paths and tropical gardens, allowing visitors to explore the mysterious, dripping caverns and experience one of Tahiti’s most enduring natural legends.
