Menton, situated at the very edge of the French Riviera just steps from the Italian border, enjoys an exceptionally mild microclimate that makes it the warmest town on the Côte d'Azur. This unique weather allows citrus to thrive, celebrated annually in February during the spectacular Fête du Citron, where enormous sculptures are crafted entirely from lemons and oranges. The historic center cascades down a steep hill in an animated display of pastel-colored facades, culminating at the baroque Basilique Saint-Michel Archange, with its elegant pebble-mosaic square facing the Mediterranean. Art lovers are drawn to the dedicated Jean Cocteau museum near the harbor, showcasing the multi-talented artist's works in a dramatic contemporary structure. Strolling along the Promenade du Soleil or exploring the lush Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden has a quieter, more authentic coastal experience compared to its bustling neighbors. Visitors can enjoy local specialties like barbajuan, a savory stuffed fritter, or freshly caught seafood while absorbing the unique blend of French elegance and Italian warmth that defines the town's atmosphere.
