Cassis is a characterful coastal town tucked away in a natural amphitheater of white limestone cliffs and vineyards in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Located just east of Marseille, it serves as the primary gateway to the Calanques National Park. The town has a deep historical legacy, originating as a Roman fishing port known as Carsicis. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was protected by a fortified castle belonging to the Seigneurs of Les Baux. Cassis is celebrated for its unique microclimate and geology, which produce exceptional white wines; it was notably among the first three French wine regions to be granted AOC status in 1936. The landscape is dominated by the Cap Canaille, France's highest sea cliff, rising 394 meters above the Mediterranean. Modern Cassis is a high-end tourist destination that manages to retain its authentic Provençal identity, with its pastel-colored quay, traditional Pointu fishing boats, and spirited weekly markets.
