Boucau is a coastal city in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, positioned on the right bank of the Adour river at its mouth. For centuries a small fishing hamlet, Boucau underwent a dramatic transformation during the industrial era when it was chosen as the site for the massive 'Forges de l'Adour' ironworks in the late 1800s. This industrial boom integrated Boucau into the broader Port of Bayonne complex, which remains a primary economic engine for the town today. Geographically, Boucau is the meeting point of the flat, sandy Landes coastline to the north and the rugged Basque hills to the south. This unique position results in a cultural blend of Gascon and Basque influences. The town is characterized by its steep streets leading down to the river, its historic docklands, and its proximity to the Atlantic beaches. In recent years, Boucau has focused on urban renewal, converting old industrial sites into public spaces while maintaining its proud maritime and working-class heritage.
