Aire-sur-l'Adour is a town steeped in history located in southwestern France within the Landes department. Established since antiquity as Atura, it rose to political prominence during the late Roman and early medieval periods as a favored residence of Visigothic kings. Notably, in 506 AD, King Alaric II issued the Breviary of Alaric here, a significant legal code that integrated Roman law for the local population. The town's layout is intrinsically linked to the Adour River, which historically facilitated the trade of goods like wine and wood. In modern times, it is widely recognized as a vital stop for pilgrims traveling the Via Podiensis toward Santiago de Compostela. The urban landscape features impressive religious landmarks, such as the 11th-century Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Church of Sainte-Quitterie. The latter is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its Romanesque architecture and a 4th-century marble sarcophagus located in its crypt. Economically, the municipality thrives on agricultural diversity, including Tursan vineyards and poultry farming, while maintaining a strong cultural identity rooted in Gascon traditions and hospitality.
