Each summer Yerres celebrates the impressionist heritage around the Caillebotte property with exhibitions, guided tours and cultural activities from May to October.
Yerres is an elegant suburban city located in the Essonne department, about 20 kilometers southeast of Paris. It gained worldwide recognition as the longtime home of the Impressionist painter Gustave Caillebotte. Between 1860 and 1879, Caillebotte used the family estate and the surrounding river landscapes as subjects for more than 80 of his paintings. Today, the Caillebotte Property is a major cultural destination, featuring a neoclassical villa and a vast English-style park. Historically, Yerres developed around its 12th-century Benedictine abbey, which remained active until the French Revolution. The city's geography is characterized by its location along the winding Yerres River and its proximity to the vast Sénart Forest, providing a significant amount of recreational space. Unlike many other suburbs, Yerres has strictly managed its urban growth to preserve its historical character and natural environment. It remains a high-end residential area, well-connected to Paris via the RER D rail line, offering a blend of artistic heritage and modern suburban living.
