Savigny-le-Temple is a significant municipality in the Seine-et-Marne department, known for its rapid development as part of the Sénart new town project. Historically a small hamlet named Savigny-sur-Melun, it was renamed to honor the Knights Templar who established a commandery here in the 12th century. The town's population skyrocketed from around 800 in 1970 to over 30,000 today, reflecting the large-scale urban planning of the late 20th century. A standout feature of the city is the Ferme du Coulevrain, an eco-museum located on a former farmstead that illustrates the region's agricultural past and its suburban transformation. Savigny is characterized by its abundant greenery, interconnected lakes, and commitment to environmental sustainability. The urban design emphasizes walkability and community spaces, making it a popular choice for families. Economically, it thrives on logistics and service industries integrated within the larger Sénart economic hub. Served by the RER D line, it provides a crucial link between the administrative center of Melun and the city of Paris, balancing local employment with regional accessibility.
