Situated on the left bank of the Seine in the Yvelines department, Les Mureaux is home to a fascinating history defined by both elite sports and high-tech industry. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this broad section of the river served as the premier hub for French sailing; the prestigious Cercle de la Voile de Paris hosted major regattas here, and the sailing events for the 1900 Paris Olympics were contested directly on these waters. Today, the town is internationally recognized for its cutting-edge aerospace sector, functioning as the primary assembly site for the European Ariane series of space launch vehicles. Architectural highlights include the Château de Bècheville, an impressive 19th-century manor that was once owned by the renowned author Stendhal and now houses the municipal conservatory of music and dance. Along the banks of the Seine, miles of well-maintained pathways shaded by weeping willows provide excellent routes for cyclists and joggers. Despite the heavy industrial presence on its outskirts, the town center has maintained a lively, multicultural atmosphere centered around its covered market halls. With the Vexin Français Regional Nature Park located just across the river, the town serves as a convenient staging ground for exploring the surrounding countryside.
