Alfortville is a densely populated municipality in the Val-de-Marne department, located just southeast of Paris. It occupies a unique geographical position on a strip of land between the Seine and Marne rivers, which meet at its northern tip. Originally part of Maisons-Alfort, Alfortville gained its independence in 1885. The city's history is deeply intertwined with the development of the Paris-Lyon-Marseille railway line, which accelerated its industrial growth. Most notably, Alfortville is the cultural heart of the Armenian community in France; following the 1915 Armenian Genocide, many refugees settled here, creating a lasting legacy. Today, the city is home to numerous Armenian churches, schools, and cultural centers. The urban landscape is a mix of traditional brick architecture from the industrial era and contemporary housing projects. With its riverbanks now being transformed into green corridors, Alfortville provides a blend of historical depth, cultural diversity, and modern urban living within the Greater Paris area.
