💡 Tips

  • Check the tide schedule before walking on the beach; the sea recedes far, creating vast expanses, but comes back quickly.
  • The best views of the Opal Coast can be enjoyed from the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Trail) along the cliffs.
  • During low tide, you can walk towards the Fort de l'Heurt, a Napoleonic fort ruin in the sea.
  • Parking near the main beach can be difficult in summer; arrive early or use lots slightly further inland.
  • It can get quite windy on the coast, so always bring a windbreaker, even on sunny days.

Plage de l'Hoovercraft

Located on the Opal Coast in the Pas-de-Calais department, this coastal town directly borders the southern edge of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The 1.5-kilometer sandy beach is framed by dramatic cliffs, atop which the Parc de la Falaise provides extensive recreational grounds on the Mont de Couppes. Emerging from the shallow coastal waters are the stone ruins of the Fort de l'Heurt, erected in 1803 under the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte to prepare for an intended invasion of England. The local maritime heritage is kept alive by the continued use of Flobarts, traditional wide-bottomed wooden fishing boats that are hauled directly onto the shore. Further along the coastline, the Cap d'Alprech cliff is crowned by a lighthouse originally constructed in 1842, noted for its distinct exterior spiral metal staircase. The town center was heavily targeted during World War II, suffering massive destruction during Operation Starkey in September 1943, which led to a predominantly postwar architectural layout. In warmer months, the coastal promenade becomes a hub for water sports, while the elevated cliff paths offer walkers uninterrupted views directly across the English Channel.
