Montfort-sur-Meu is an appealing historic town in the Ille-et-Vilaine department of Brittany, located about 30 kilometers west of Rennes. Built at the strategic confluence of the Meu and Garun rivers, the town's history dates back to the 11th century when it became the seat of a powerful barony. The medieval heritage is still palpable today in the historic center, which features well-preserved half-timbered houses and the imposing 14th-century Tour Papegault, a remnant of the ancient city walls. Montfort-sur-Meu is globally recognized as the birthplace of Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a prominent 17th-century Catholic saint and author; his family home remains a major local landmark and pilgrimage site. Beyond its historical appeal, the town serves as a key administrative and economic hub for the surrounding area, boasting a lively market and a variety of local services. The landscape surrounding Montfort is characterized by the traditional Breton 'bocage' countryside, offering numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and kayaking on the river. Its excellent transport links, including a train station on the Rennes-Brest line, make it an attractive location for commuters and tourists exploring the heart of Brittany.
