Gières is a dynamic commune located in the southeastern suburbs of Grenoble, in the Isère department. It is widely recognized as the academic heart of the region, as it hosts a major part of the Université Grenoble Alpes campus. This unique position makes Gières a hub for innovation, research, and high-tech industries, attracting thousands of students and international researchers every year. Geographically, the town is located in the Isère valley at the foot of the Belledonne mountain range, providing residents with easy access to high-altitude hiking, climbing, and winter sports. The town has evolved from a quiet agricultural community into a well-connected urban center, primarily due to the arrival of the university in the 1960s and the continuous expansion of the Grenoble tramway system. The Grenoble-Universités-Gières train station is a critical transit point for the entire Alpine furrow (Sillon Alpin). Despite its urban growth, Gières has preserved several green lungs, such as the parks along the Isère river, offering a high quality of life. Its community life is enriched by a blend of local traditions and the cosmopolitan influence of the university population.
