Rauma is a city located on the west coast of Finland along the Gulf of Bothnia, world-renowned for its exceptionally preserved wooden architecture. The historic center, Old Rauma, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991 and contains over 600 traditional wooden buildings spanning 28 hectares. Granted city rights in 1442, Rauma flourished as a maritime trade hub, benefiting from its strategic coastal position and skilled seafarers. A significant cultural tradition is the craft of bobbin lace-making, which dates back to the 18th century and is celebrated every summer during the popular Lace Week festival. The city is also famous for its unique dialect, known as 'Rauman giäl', which incorporates elements from Swedish, English, and German due to its seafaring history. Economically, Rauma is a vital industrial center today, featuring one of Finland's largest commercial ports and significant paper and shipbuilding industries. It remains a rare example of a living medieval town that maintains its historical character alongside modern industrial efficiency.
