Raahe Steel Works (Finland)

Weather…

The Raahe Steel Works is the largest integrated steel production facility in the Nordic countries and a cornerstone of Finnish heavy industry. Established in 1960 by the Rautaruukki company, the plant was built to ensure national self-sufficiency in steel and to bolster the economic development of Northern Finland. Today, the facility is operated by the SSAB group and covers an extensive area of approximately 500 hectares on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The site features its own deep-water harbor, which facilitates the year-round import of raw materials like iron ore pellets and coal, as well as the global export of finished steel plates and coils. The complex includes two blast furnaces, a basic oxygen steelmaking plant, and a sophisticated hot rolling mill dedicated to high-strength specialty steels. In recent years, significant investments have been directed toward transitioning to fossil-free steelmaking to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. As the largest employer in the Raahe region, the works fundamentally shapes the local infrastructure and the socioeconomic landscape of the surrounding area.
