Meyazia 27 Monument
The Meyazia 27 Monument, widely known as Arat Kilo, is a major historical landmark situated in the heart of Addis Ababa. It was erected to commemorate the 27th of Meyazia (May 5), the day in 1941 when Ethiopia was officially liberated from the five-year Italian occupation. The monument is a massive obelisk adorned with intricate reliefs and sculptures depicting the heroic resistance of Ethiopian patriots against foreign invaders. At the base, it features representations of the Lion of Judah, the traditional symbol of the Ethiopian monarchy. Meyazia 27 also marks the date of Emperor Haile Selassie's triumphant return to the capital following his exile. The square surrounding the monument is a central traffic hub, located near the Parliament and various government ministries. It serves as an enduring symbol of national independence and sovereignty, hosting annual wreath-laying ceremonies on Victory Day.
