Addis Lion Zoo (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Addis Lion Zoo, also known as the Anbessa Zoo, is located in the Sidist Kilo district of Addis Ababa. It was established in 1948 by Emperor Haile Selassie to house the royal collection of the famous Abyssinian lions. These lions are globally unique due to their thick, dark, almost black manes that extend down to their abdomens. The zoo was originally an integral part of the imperial palace grounds, serving to demonstrate the strength and pride of the Ethiopian monarchy. Today, the facility houses various other species alongside the lions, including monkeys, tortoises, antelopes, and several indigenous birds. Although some of the enclosures are aged, the zoo remains a critical site for the conservation of the genetically distinct Ethiopian lion population. A small onsite museum displays historical photographs and records detailing the history of lion-keeping in Ethiopia. The zoo is a favorite destination for local families and provides an intimate look at the nation's symbolic 'Lion of Judah.' Efforts are currently underway to modernize the facility to better align with international animal welfare standards.
