Akhmim is a city steeped in history located in the Sohag Governorate on the eastern bank of the Nile, renowned for its extraordinary archaeological heritage. In ancient times, the city was known as Ipu or Panopolis and was considered one of the most important religious centers in Upper Egypt, dedicated to the god of fertility, Min. A standout piece of evidence from this era is the monumental statue of Princess Meritamen, daughter of Ramesses II, which stands over seven meters tall and was only discovered in 1982. Beyond its archaeological treasures, Akhmim has been famous since antiquity for its textile arts, particularly silk weaving, a tradition that local artisans continue to uphold to this day. The city features a dynamic economic structure where agriculture and traditional crafts go hand in hand. Today, Akhmim is not only a destination for historians but also a lively hub for trade and culture within the Sohag region. The combination of millennia-old monuments and living traditions gives the city a unique atmosphere.
