The Zohr gas field represents the most significant breakthrough in the Egyptian energy sector in recent decades. It was discovered in 2015 by the Italian energy major Eni within the Shorouk Block, located approximately 190 kilometers north of Port Said. With estimated reserves of about 30 trillion cubic feet (850 billion cubic meters) of natural gas, it stands as the largest gas discovery ever made in the Mediterranean Sea. The field's development progressed at record speed, allowing production to commence by late 2017. This find has successfully transitioned Egypt from a net gas importer to a major regional exporter, drastically enhancing national energy security. The gas is transported via subsea pipelines to an onshore processing facility. The strategic importance of Zohr extends beyond Egypt's borders, as it is a cornerstone of the country's ambition to become a regional energy hub connecting the Eastern Mediterranean with Europe.
