Gabal el-Muta (Egypt)

Weather…

Gabal el-Muta, known as the "Mountain of the Dead," is a conical hill in the Siwa Oasis that served as an ancient necropolis. It contains hundreds of tombs carved into the soft limestone, primarily dating from the 26th Dynasty through to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Among the most significant discoveries are the Tomb of Si-Amun, renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved and colorful wall paintings, and the Tomb of the Crocodile. During World War II, the residents of Siwa utilized these ancient tomb caverns as bomb shelters to escape raids by Axis and Allied forces. The hill provides a panoramic 360-degree view of the entire oasis, including its dense palm groves and the shimmering Siwa salt lake. Geologically, the formation is an isolated limestone outcrop shaped into its current form by weathering and erosion. Today, Gabal el-Muta is one of the most vital archaeological sites in the region and for travelers exploring Egypt's Western Desert.
