During the Ottoman era in the 16th century, a massive fortress was built to protect the city and the pilgrimage routes to Mecca. For centuries, El Quseir served as the primary embarkation port for Muslim pilgrims traveling from Egypt and North Africa. The architecture of the old town is unique, preserving the traditional charm of the coastal region with its coral-stone houses and carved wooden balconies. At the beginning of the 20th century, phosphate mining revitalized the local economy, leaving behind historic industrial facilities that are still visible today.
