Lake Mariut, known in antiquity as Lake Mareotis, is situated directly south of Alexandria and has a long and complex history. During the Greco-Roman era, the lake was much larger and functioned as a major inland port for the export of Egyptian wine and grain. Today, the lake has been fragmented into several isolated basins due to intensive land reclamation and road construction, retaining only a fraction of its original size. The water is highly saline and suffers from heavy pollution from industrial waste and urban sewage originating from the metropolis of Alexandria. Despite these stresses, the lake remains ecologically significant as a wintering site for migratory birds. The shoreline areas are partially characterized by informal settlements and industrial facilities. In recent years, government initiatives have been launched to remediate the ecosystem of Lake Mariut and restore its historical status as a landmark of the city of Alexandria.
