Spøttrup Castle is one of Denmark's best-preserved medieval fortresses, located in the northwestern part of Jutland. Built around 1500 for the Bishop of Viborg, the castle was designed as a fortified residence to protect the church's landholdings during a period of political and religious unrest. The architecture is characterized by massive red brick walls, small windows, and extensive defensive systems, including a double moat and high earthen ramparts. Following the Reformation, the castle passed into private ownership but largely retained its defensive character. Between 1937 and 1941, the Danish state undertook a massive restoration to return the building to its original medieval appearance, removing later additions. Today, Spøttrup serves as a museum, offering visitors an authentic look at the lives of bishops and nobility in the late Middle Ages. Its historic medicinal herb garden, containing over 200 species, is one of the most significant of its kind in Northern Europe. The castle is a center for living history, hosting annual medieval festivals and jousting tournaments.
