Hanstholm is prominently situated on a limestone cliff in northwest Jutland and is primarily known for two things: its massive fishing harbor and the remains of the Atlantic Wall. The Hanstholm Bunker Museum is Northern Europe's largest World War II fortification. Visitors can explore massive concrete structures and an extensive tunnel network that once housed heavy German cannons designed to control the Skagerrak strait. The harbor of Hanstholm is one of Denmark's most vital fishing hubs. Large fish auctions take place here daily, where tons of fresh catch from the North Sea change hands. For tourists, watching the cutters arrive and the bustling activity on the quay is an authentic experience. The town also serves as the gateway to Thy National Park, Denmark's first national park, which stretches south of Hanstholm with pristine dune landscapes and lakes. The coast at Hanstholm is rugged and windswept, making it popular with windsurfers as well. The Hanstholm Fyr lighthouse provides panoramic views over the sea and the hinterland. Local restaurants naturally feature fresh fish at the top of their menus, with plaice considered a local specialty. Hanstholm is well-connected via National Road 11 and is a convenient starting point for nature explorations in the northwest.
