The Church of Panagia Angeloktisti in the village of Kiti, near Larnaca, is one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in Cyprus. Its name means 'built by angels,' referring to a legend that angels completed the church overnight. The current structure dates back to the 11th century and is a cross-in-square church built over the ruins of a 5th-century early Christian basilica. The church is world-famous for its mosaic in the apse, which dates from the 6th century and depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus between the Archangels Gabriel and Michael. This mosaic is considered one of the best-preserved examples of early Christian art worldwide and survived the period of iconoclasm. Over the centuries, the building was expanded with a Latin chapel for the Frankish noble family Gibelet, reflecting the island's eventful history. The church is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and remains an active place of worship and a magnet for art historians. The harmonious combination of different architectural styles makes it an architectural jewel.
