Kamares Aqueduct (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Kamares Aqueduct, also known as the Bekir Pasha Aqueduct, is a magnificent example of Ottoman engineering located on the outskirts of Larnaca. It was constructed in 1747 at the initiative of Abu Bekir Pasha, the Ottoman Governor of Larnaca, to address the town's chronic water shortages. The aqueduct carried fresh water from a source at the Tremithos River over a distance of approximately 10 kilometers into the heart of Larnaca. Its most prominent feature is the series of 75 well-preserved stone arches that stretch majestically across the flat landscape and are often illuminated at night. The design echoes the traditional style of Roman aqueducts and showcases the sophisticated functional aesthetics of the 18th century. The aqueduct remained in continuous use for over 180 years until 1939, when it was finally superseded by modern piping systems. Today, the surrounding area is protected as an archaeological site and serves as a popular public space for walking, providing a unique look into Cyprus's infrastructural history during the Ottoman era.
