Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, holds the unique distinction of being the world's last divided capital city, with a UN buffer zone known as the 'Green Line' splitting it into northern and southern sectors. Located in the central Mesaoria Plain, the city has been the island's administrative heart since the 10th century. Its most iconic historical feature is the massive Venetian walls built in the 16th century, which encircle the old city in a star shape with eleven bastions. Inside these walls, a rich tapestry of history unfolds through sites like the Büyük Han, a striking Ottoman caravanserai, and the Selimiye Mosque, originally a 13th-century Gothic cathedral. Since the opening of the Ledra Street pedestrian crossing in 2003, the city has seen a resurgence in shared cultural activities and tourism between the two communities. Nicosia is home to the Cyprus Museum, the island's premier archaeological museum, housing artifacts from the Neolithic age to the Roman period. The city seamlessly blends ancient history with modern life, featuring contemporary art galleries and business districts alongside traditional markets. Despite its division, Nicosia remains a symbol of Cypriot resilience and a meeting point for diverse cultural influences spanning millennia.
