Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (Cuba)

Weather…

The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca, commonly known as Castillo del Morro, is a massive fortress in Santiago de Cuba designed to protect the city's bay from pirate raids. Commissioned in 1638 and designed by the acclaimed Italian military engineer Giovanni Battista Antonelli, its construction spanned several decades. Perched on a steep promontory approximately 70 meters above sea level, it is regarded as the most complete and best-preserved example of 17th-century Spanish-American military architecture. The fortress's design masterfully incorporates a series of terraces, bastions, and trenches into the natural rock formations of the cliffside. Throughout its history, the Castillo withstood numerous attacks by English and French naval forces, as well as several devastating earthquakes that necessitated major repairs. In the 1960s, a meticulous restoration led by Francisco Prat Puig returned the structure to its former glory. Since 1997, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and currently houses a museum detailing the history of piracy in the Caribbean.
