Moncada Barracks (Cuba)

Weather…

The Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba stands as a pivotal historical site, marking the symbolic birthplace of the Cuban Revolution. Originally established in 1859 during the Spanish colonial era, the facility functioned as the nation's second-largest military garrison for decades. On July 26, 1953, a group of insurgents led by Fidel Castro launched a daring assault on the barracks, an event that failed tactically but successfully galvanized national opposition against the Batista regime. Following the 1959 revolutionary victory, the fortress was repurposed into a school complex known as Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio, reflecting the new government's focus on education. Part of the structure now houses the 26th of July Historical Museum, which preserves artifacts and detailed accounts of the uprising. The building's bright yellow exterior still features replicated bullet holes, serving as a permanent memorial to the historical significance of the struggle.
