The Southern Escambray Mountains, also known as the Macizo de Guamuhaya, are located in central Cuba, spanning the provinces of Sancti Spíritus and Cienfuegos. This mountainous region is renowned for its steep slopes, deep canyons, and spectacular waterfalls such as 'El Nicho' and 'Salto del Caburní.' Geologically, the massif is composed of crystalline schists and limestones, which has led to the formation of numerous caves and distinctive landforms. In Cuban history, the Escambray played a significant role as a site for armed conflicts, particularly during the struggles against the revolutionary government in the early 1960s.
