💡 Tips
- Celebrate New Year's Eve at noon on December 31st by the lake; it is a legendary local tradition.
- Visit the Vrelo Cave; it is one of the few in the world that is entirely level and has no stairs.
- Bring a light jacket even in summer, as mountain evenings can get surprisingly cool.
- Avoid the weekend crowds at Lake Bajer by heading to the much quieter Lake Lepenica nearby.
- Take the tourist train for a relaxed tour around the lakes, especially if traveling with children.
🍽 Food
The absolute local specialty, often served warm; try it at Restaurant Bitoraj in the center.
Wild boar goulash or venison steak with cranberries are staples of the Gorski Kotar mountain cuisine.
In local taverns (like Konoba Volta), breaded frog legs are served as a traditional delicacy.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for artisanal jams and liqueurs made from wild blueberries (check Obrt Borovnica).
Dark forest honey is particularly aromatic and of high quality in this region.
A fresh, 'squeaky' cheese often sold directly by local farmers in the area.
Larger and quieter than Lake Bajer; convenient for long, undisturbed walks along the shore.

Water temperature…
Fužine is situated 730 meters above sea level in the southwest of Gorski Kotar, surrounded by dense pine forests and mountain peaks. It is one of the region's oldest tourist destinations, boasting a unique location that provides a true mountain climate despite being only 30 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The landmark of Fužine is Lake Bajer, an artificial reservoir that fits perfectly into the landscape and provides numerous recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and a scenic walking path around its perimeter. Another major attraction is the Vrelo Cave, discovered by chance in 1950. It is exceptional because it is almost entirely flat, making it easily accessible for children and visitors with disabilities. Fužine is famous for its mountain gastronomy, particularly game meat dishes, forest fruits, and its renowned strudels. A unique tradition is the annual New Year's Eve celebration held at noon on December 31st. Accessibility is excellent via the A6 motorway (Zagreb-Rijeka) and the local railway station.
