Puerto Jiménez is the largest town on the wildly biodiverse Osa Peninsula, sitting on the tranquil shores of the Golfo Dulce. Historically a rugged outpost for gold miners and loggers, it has transformed into a frontier town dedicated to ecotourism. It is the most popular launching point for intense, multi-day trekking expeditions into the dense jungles of Corcovado National Park, widely considered one of the most biologically intense places on Earth. The town retains a rustic, authentic, and slightly "Wild West" atmosphere. Wildlife is omnipresent; scarlet macaws fly overhead, and monkeys often swing through the trees in town. Gastronomy here is unpretentious and hearty, featuring traditional sodas and seafood restaurants catering to hungry hikers returning from the jungle, as well as expat-run cafes. Getting to Puerto Jiménez involves a beautiful but long drive down the southern Pacific coast, or a short, scenic domestic flight directly to its local airstrip. The best time to visit the Osa Peninsula is strictly during the dry season from January to April. During the heavy rainy season (September-November), many rural roads and park trails become entirely impassable due to flooded rivers.
