Situated on the banks of the Río Barú, Dominical is the epitome of a laid-back surfer village on the Costa Ballena. Its dark sand beach and incredibly consistent, powerful waves draw dedicated surfers from all corners of the globe. The village itself maintains a barefoot, bohemian vibe with unpaved streets, lively artisan markets, and a strong community deeply dedicated to yoga, spiritual wellness, and living in harmony with nature. The nature here is dramatic, as the lush, jungle-covered mountains drop almost directly into the ocean. It serves as a great basecamp for visiting the spectacular Nauyaca Waterfalls and the nearby Marino Ballena National Park. The culinary offerings reflect the town's alternative lifestyle, ranging from excellent vegetarian and raw vegan cafes to spots serving organic coffee and fresh local fish. Dominical is conveniently located right off the paved Costanera Sur highway, roughly three to four hours from San José. While the green season (May to November) provides the best surfing conditions and spirited green landscapes, the dry season (December to April) attracts the most sun-seekers.
