Loango Slave Trade Port (Congo - Brazzaville)

Weather…

The former Loango Slave Trade Port, situated on the Atlantic coast near Diosso, is one of the most significant and tragic historical sites in Central Africa. From the 17th to the 19th century, this location served as a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade, through which an estimated two million people were forcibly deported to the Americas. The site includes the poignant 'Path of No Return,' the final route captives walked from the holding warehouses to the shoreline to be loaded onto waiting ships. Unlike the stone fortresses found in West Africa, Loango did not feature permanent forts, yet the landscape and oral traditions testify to the immense scale of the human trafficking that occurred here. The port's location within the powerful Kingdom of Loango made it a focal point for interactions between local monarchs and European merchants. Today, Loango is a site of remembrance and reflection, currently on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List to preserve the memory of slavery's victims. Visitors can explore the historical markers that commemorate the last steps taken by the enslaved on African soil before their forced departure.
