Kaifeng Dragon Pavilion
The Dragon Pavilion (Longting) in Kaifeng, Henan Province, is a grand historical structure built upon the ruins of the imperial palaces of several Chinese dynasties. The current pavilion sits atop a 13-meter-high stone platform that was once part of the administrative heart of the Northern Song, Jin, and Ming Dynasties. The structure seen today was constructed in 1692 during the Qing Dynasty, originally serving as a hall where local officials would perform rituals to honor the emperor. It is renowned for its imperial yellow-glazed roof tiles and the intricate 'Dragon Stone' pillar housed within, which features masterfully carved mythical creatures. The site is flanked by two large man-made lakes, Pan Lake and Yang Lake, which according to local legend, represent the loyalty and treachery of historical families. Throughout history, Kaifeng was frequently devastated by the floods of the Yellow River, but the Dragon Pavilion remained relatively preserved due to its elevated position. Today, the surrounding park is a cultural hub, most famous for hosting the annual Chrysanthemum Festival every autumn, drawing millions of visitors to celebrate the city's royal heritage.
