Njimi Ruins (Chad)

Weather…

Njimi was the historical capital of the Kanem Empire and one of the most significant urban centers in Central Africa during the medieval period. The exact location of the city within the Kanem region of modern-day Chad is still a subject of archaeological debate, though sites near Mao are widely considered the most likely locations. The city flourished between the 11th and 14th centuries under the Sayfawa dynasty, a time when Kanem dominated trade between the Mediterranean and the Lake Chad basin. Njimi served as a major political power base and a primary hub for the early spread of Islam in the region. In the late 14th century, persistent internal strife and attacks from Bulala warriors forced the rulers to abandon Njimi and shift the empire's center to Bornu in present-day Nigeria. The city remains a symbol of early African statehood and the complex trans-Saharan trade networks. Archaeological evidence, including pottery and metalwork, points to the once-thriving economy and craft specialization of its inhabitants.
