Mao is the capital of the Kanem region and is regarded as one of the most historically significant centers in western Chad. The city is the traditional seat of the Sultan of Kanem and was a core component of the once-powerful Kanem-Bornu Empire, which dominated trans-Saharan trade for centuries. Geographically, Mao is situated at the edge of the Sahara Desert on an elevation that is unusually high for the region, providing a distinctive panorama of the surrounding sand dunes. The population predominantly consists of the Kanembu people, whose cultural identity and religious traditions are deeply rooted in Sunni Islam. With approximately 35,000 residents, Mao today serves as an important administrative hub and a marketplace for the nomadic communities of the desert. The climate is extremely arid and hot, limiting agriculture to oases and livestock rearing. The city proudly preserves its architectural heritage and remains a symbol of the endurance of traditional governance structures within the modern state.
