Fajã d'Água is an idyllic bay on the western coast of Brava Island, widely regarded as one of the most fertile spots in Cape Verde. The village is located at the foot of towering cliffs that encircle the bay, protecting it from dry winds. Thanks to numerous underground springs, the region is exceptionally green, boasting lush plantations of bananas, mangoes, and papayas. Historically, Fajã d'Água served as a significant port for American whaling ships during the 19th century, which sparked a long tradition of emigration to the United States. While the coast lacks sandy beaches, it features fascinating natural seawater pools separated from the open ocean by volcanic rock barriers. The water in the bay is remarkably clear and deep blue, providing a striking contrast to the lively green of the surrounding hillsides. Since Brava remains untouched by mass tourism, the village has preserved its authentic and peaceful atmosphere. Hiking down to the bay from Nova Sintra is considered one of the most scenic nature experiences on the island. Fajã d'Água stands as a symbol of the isolation and natural splendor of Cape Verde's smallest inhabited island.

Thrillingly reached via a highly steep, winding, and incredibly scenic cobbled road descending directly from Nova Sintra on the island of Brava, usually navigated safely by an experienced local aluguer (minibus) or taxi.

A fantastic year-round destination, but the reliably drier months stretching from October to June provide the absolute best, most comfortable conditions for long walking explorations and safely swimming in the natural coastal pools.

The characterful village is beautifully tucked away in a lush, green bay, dramatically surrounded by steep volcanic mountains; rural paths leading down to the natural pools involve cautiously walking over uneven, ancient lava rocks.

Definitely bring proper swimwear, truly sturdy walking sandals or specialized water shoes for navigating the exceptionally rocky shoreline, robust sun protection, and a good camera to capture the memorable, expansive bay views.

Hired vehicles usually drop visiting passengers off conveniently at the very end of the main road directly in the village; available parking space is understandably extremely limited in this remarkably small, tight-knit coastal settlement.

Always be extremely cautious of powerful ocean swells when enthusiastically swimming in the natural lava pools; absolutely never swim if the open sea looks rough and heavy waves are aggressively crashing completely over the protective rocks.
