Mosteiros is a characterful town on the northeastern coast of Fogo Island, situated at the base of the volcano's steep slopes. The area is renowned as the island's most fertile region, benefiting from higher rainfall and mineral-rich volcanic soil. It is home to famous coffee plantations producing the high-quality Fogo coffee (Café do Fogo), which is esteemed internationally. The town consists of several districts, including Igreja, where the central parish church is located. Mosteiros is often shrouded in trade wind clouds, providing a cool microclimate and lush greenery that contrasts sharply with the arid southern side of the island. The coastline near Mosteiros is rugged and rocky, featuring natural lava pools used for swimming. Economically, the town is centered around the export of coffee, bananas, and other tropical fruits. The architecture is primarily functional but provides numerous vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic mountain flanks that frame the settlement.
