Niagara-on-the-Lake
Located just 20 kilometers north of Niagara Falls, this town was the first capital of Upper Canada in 1792. The downtown area, particularly Queen Street, features preserved 19th-century brick buildings housing boutiques, galleries, and bakeries. The town's military history is visible at Fort George, a major defensive post during the War of 1812, where costumed interpreters demonstrate military drills today. The surrounding region is one of Canada's most productive agricultural zones. Over 40 wineries operate in the immediate vicinity, specializing in Icewine, a sweet dessert wine made from grapes frozen on the vine. From May to October, visitors frequently rent bicycles to travel between the vineyards along the flat rural roads. Culturally, the town is anchored by the Shaw Festival, a major theatrical event running from April to December that focuses on the works of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries. With its position on Lake Ontario, the town has clear views of the Toronto skyline across the water on cloudless days.
