Big White
Big White is one of British Columbia's most popular ski resorts, perched high above the Okanagan Valley. The resort features what is known as 'Okanagan Champagne Powder', an extremely light and dry snow that falls in massive quantities due to the unique weather patterns of the Monashee Mountains. A striking visual feature near the summit is the 'snow ghosts': evergreen trees completely encased in rime ice and snow, transforming them into surreal, towering white sculptures. The resort is deeply focused on family-friendly experiences and holds the title for Canada's largest fully ski-in/ski-out resort village, where almost all lodging has direct slope access. Beyond the 119 designated ski runs, visitors can try ice climbing on a 60-foot ice tower, snowmobiling, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and a massive tube park. In the summer, the slopes transform into a playground for hikers and downhill mountain bikers looking to explore the alpine meadows. Located just 56 kilometers southeast of Kelowna, Big White is less than an hour's drive from the Kelowna International Airport. This straightforward accessibility makes it a favorite for both domestic and international travelers. The prime time for winter enthusiasts is from December through March, when the snow coverage is thickest and the snow ghosts are fully formed. July and August are best suited for those wanting to hike the summer trails.
