St. Anastasia Island (Bulgaria)

Weather…

St. Anastasia Island is a small volcanic rock island positioned in the Gulf of Burgas, standing as Bulgaria's only inhabited island in the Black Sea. Spanning only about one hectare, its history is incredibly layered, beginning in the 14th century with the establishment of a monastery dedicated to Saint Anastasia the Deliverer from Potions. Throughout the ages, it transitioned from a secluded religious sanctuary to a frequent target for pirate raids, leading to various fortifications. In the early 20th century, specifically during the 1920s, the island gained notoriety as a prison for political dissidents, earning it the nickname 'the Bulgarian Alcatraz.' Following a comprehensive restoration project in 2014, it reopened as a cultural and tourist attraction reachable by boat from Burgas. Visitors can explore the preserved medieval church, an interactive museum chronicling island lore, and the lighthouse built in 1889. The island's rugged coastline is dotted with peculiar rock formations, such as 'The Dragon' and 'The Petrified Pirate Ship,' which feature prominently in local mythology. Today, it has unique accommodations in former monastic cells and a traditional restaurant serving regional herbal teas and seafood.
