Abritus

The Abritus Archaeological Reserve (Римски град Абритус) is located near the modern town of Razgrad in northeastern Bulgaria. It preserves the remains of a significant ancient Roman settlement that originated as a military camp in the 1st century AD and later blossomed into a thriving urban center. Abritus gained historical infamy due to the Battle of Abritus in 251 AD, where the Roman army suffered a catastrophic defeat by the Goths, resulting in the death of Emperor Decius.

The well-maintained and presented archaeological reserve features impressive ruins, notably the thick fortress walls, defensive towers, and gates, which were constructed in the 4th century to defend against gothic incursions. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds to see remnants of urban architecture, such as the foundations of a large residential complex featuring a peristyle (a columned inner courtyard).

An integral part of the reserve is the on-site, interactive archaeological museum. It displays numerous artifacts unearthed during excavations, including inscriptions, everyday tools, and coins. Particularly remarkable is the Abritus gold coin hoard, one of the largest of its kind from late antiquity, which highlights the historical economic prosperity of the region. The reserve offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman and early Byzantine provincial life.
